Bedfordshire CCG is responsible for buying healthcare for its 450,000 population that live in this semi-rural county just north of London.
The right time for change
NHS Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group’s spend on planned musculoskeletal care (MSK – excluding trauma) for adults is over £26 million per year. Traditionally, this has been spent through dozens of separate contracts resulting in fragmented care pathways that are both inefficient and offer less than ideal patient experience and outcomes.
After a year of engagement with local patients, GPs and specialist clinicians, with national representative bodies for MSK specialties and patients, and a series of market engagement events, a tender process using the COBIC approach led to the contract award of an accountable lead provider, responsible for co-ordinating and improving the MSK system for Bedfordshire.
